Broncos Travel to Face Denver and LMU

BOISE, Idaho – After a home sweep last Saturday over Cal Poly and Eastern Washington, the Broncos hit the road this week for Denver, where they will face the Denver Pioneers of the Summit League on Friday and the LMU Lions out of the West Coast Conference on Saturday.

Boise State enters the week at 5-3 overall and undefeated at home. All three losses have come at Big Ten schools: No. 1 Ohio State, then-19th-ranked Michigan State and Indiana.

THE MATCHUPS
- Denver:Â The Pioneers enter the week undefeated at 6-0, coming off a home victory on Feb. 8 over Idaho State (6-1), followed by a road win at Utah State (4-3) on Feb. 11. The Broncos lead the all-time series 6-3 dating back to 2004. DU won 4-0 last year in a match at LMU in Los Angeles.
- LMU:Â The Lions will bring a 3-1 mark with them to Denver this week, coming off a win over Northern Arizona last weekend. Their lone loss was at UCLA (6-1). Boise State is 4-0 versus LMU (Loyola Marymount) since the 2004 campaign. The Blue and Orange won the most recent encounter 4-2 last year in Los Angeles.

- The Broncos are 5-3 overall, 4-0 at home, 1-0 in neutral contests, and 0-3 on the road.
- There are 32 teams listed on the Broncos' 2024 schedule – several are in tournaments, so they will not face all of them – 17 of the 32 finished ranked in the final ITA Top 75 poll last year, and six are currently in the 2024 ITA Top-25.
- There are 11 student-athletes on the 2024 spring roster; six have already reached 10-plus singles victories this year (Fall and spring), and two others are sitting at nine.
- Boise State finished last year with a 21-8 overall record and ranked 60th nationally.
- The Broncos are the defending Mountain West tournament champions, winning five tournament titles since joining the league in 2012 (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2023) and 17 conference tournament titles overall.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- Sam Sippel enters the week at 11-6 overall in singles and 4-1 at the No. 1 position this spring…he is currently ranked 41st nationally in singles…he was named the MW Player of the Week on Jan. 31.
- Jip van Assendelft typically plays at No. 2 singles, where he is 3-3 with a 10-5 overall record on the year…he advanced to the quarterfinal round of the ITA Mountain Region Championships in September.
- James Van Herzeele has a 12-6 record in singles and is 6-1 in team duals, playing primarily at the No. 3 and 4 positions…he reached the round of 16 in singles at the ITA regional last fall.
- Jett Middleton is 12-6 overall in singles and 4-1 in team duals, playing primarily at the four and five positions…he won the ITA Mountain Region consolation singles final against teammate Caden Moortgat.
COACHING NOTES
- Luke Shields is in his second season as the head coach at his alma mater, Boise State…he was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2023 – the third of his career and the first with the Broncos – after leading the team to a 21-8 overall record, the MW tournament championship and the first round of the NCAA tournament…his currently 26-11 at Boise State and 119-74 in his career as a collegiate head coach.
