Broncos Sweep Individual and Team Titles to Open the Season
9/8/2018 4:24:00 PM | Cross Country
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Boise State cross country teams opened the 2018 season in resounding fashion, sweeping the Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park. The men won the meet with a perfect score of 15 points – grabbing the first seven spots of the field – while the women took the team title with 17 points.Â
The perfect score by the men's team is the first perfect score in program history since both the men's and women's team won the 1998 Idaho Invitational, as both scored 15 points on the day.
"I'm really excited with the way both groups competed today," head coach Corey Ihmels said. "They followed the race plan very well by getting out hard and staying as a pack. They closed well, and I was really proud of how they started the season. I asked everyone to get out of their comfort zone for this race, and for the most part they executed that plan."
Boise State was also able to sweep both individual titles, with Yusuke Uchikoshi and Allie Ostrander being victorious on the men's and women's sides, respectively.
The women were the first to go off for the 6-kilometer race, quickly forming a pack of more than seven runners at the front of the field. A lead pack of Ostrander, Clare O'Brien and Emily Venters was able to pull away from the rest of the field at the 3-kilometer mark, and held strong as Boise State went 1-2-3-4-7 on the women's side.
Ostrander won her sixth individual race in cross country in a time of 20:21.70, while O'Brien (20:26.60), Venters (20:31.30) and Alexis Fuller (20:51.90) finished behind the redshirt junior. Freshman Maxine Paholek finished in seventh to grab the final scoring spot for the Broncos.
Uchikoshi won his first cross country race since winning the Mountain West title in 2016, leading a pack of seven Broncos for the victory. The men formed a pack of roughly a dozen runners in the lead from the gun, and held on for the dominant victory. The lead pack of seven men finished within 11 seconds of each other to defeat Washington, 15 points to 55 points.
Uhikoshi ran 24:17.20 for 8-kilometers, and was followed by Ahmed Muhumed (24:22.60), Elijah Armstrong (24:23.80), Jeff Lautenslager (24:25.40), Miler Haller (24:26.20), Addison DeHaven (24:26.30) and Noah Horsburgh (24:28.50).
"Those top three women did a great job starting the season well," Ihmels said. "It was great to see Yusuke get back to his winning ways, and it was great to see Addison and Miler go along with him. Maxine did a phenomenal job of sneaking into those top five scorers."
Boise State will now resume training, and will return to competition at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational, Sept. 28, for their first preview of the national championship course this season. A second group will be racing at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore., Sept. 29.
