Broncos Fly By Montana State In Home Opener

1/24/2020 2:09:00 PM | Men's Tennis

EAGLE, Idaho – Boise State's men's tennis came out strong and swept Montana State 7-0 in the season home opener on Friday in Eagle. Every Bronco contributed to the victory as Boise State didn't lose a single set. Standout Broncos were Mark Papadopoulos and Michael Bott as they both secured their first victories as Broncos in doubles and singles.

The win today over the Bobcats moved the Blue and Orange to 1-1 on the year, with a match tonight against Seattle U at the Eagle Tennis Club.

"I'm super happy with the way our guys came out today," said Boise State head coach Kristian Widen. "The only thing I was a little concerned with was doubles. We had a team that wasn't ready to step out of the chute and with doubles being one set we gotta be ready, it's a sprint. But as a whole, these guys were hungry and we played well in singles. We talked about making a statement today, it's easy to relax against a team you should beat an then it gets close. But today, these guys came out and showed the home crowd what we can do."

In doubles, the Broncos began the day hot sweeping Montana State 3-0. The No. 1 duo of Blake Bayldon and Simon Arca Costas – ranked 50th in the country – took down Montana State's Nejc Sitar and Christian Damagaard-Qvist 6-4. The Boise State tandem is now 7-1 on the year.

The No. 2 duo of Papadopoulos and Bott recorded their first win as a doubles pair defeating Joaquin Espinoza and Manuel Monteiro 6-3. The No. 3 pair of Wyatt DeMulling and Kyryll Kryvchun battled hard and came out on top taking down Marcos Zelver and Chase Stoner 7-5.

In singles, Arca Costas led the way for the Broncos on court four finishing his match swiftly 6-1, 6-0 against Damgaad-Qvist.  Meanwhile, on court two standout senior Wyatt DeMulling took down Joaquin Espinoza (MSU) 6-1, 6-2, moving his overall record to 9-4.

The Broncos No. 1 singles player Kyryll Kryvchun took out Sitar 6-3, 6-1. Kryvchun with the best singles record on the team moves his overall to 15-5 on the year. On court three Blake Bayldon defeated Zelver 6-4, 6-2 to improve to 9-6 on the year.

Papadopoulos and Bott both earned their first singles victories as Broncos. Papadopoulos beat Chase Stoner 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 position, while Bott put away Manuel Monteiro 6-3, 6-3 on court six.
