The Broncos defeated Pacific Sunday afternoon to wrap up a perfect 3-0 weekend at home.
BOISE, Idaho - In a match that went down to the wire, Boise State freshman Pedro Liborio's straight-set win at No. 1 singles handed the Broncos the victory over the Pacific Tigers at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday. It was their third-straight win this weekend by a 4-3 score as the Blue and Orange improved to 8-5 overall.
Coach Roghaar was happy to get the win, "Oh we're happy to get the win today. I mean, it was obviously a very tough match and we had three tough opponents here over the weekend, and to come out on top was awesome. But you know, I was just really proud of the team's effort from day to day and how they were building and focusing on the right things each day to get the job done. It was a great performance from our players today. They were just relentless and kept coming back, pushing and finding ways to play as a team. I'm just incredibly proud of the heart and the fight that these guys showed out there today."
Liborio talked about his match today, "I felt really good out there. I knew from the first point that it was going to be a tough match because he had a similar playing style to me. But I think I responded very well during the whole match and in the toughest moments. I love those moments when it's close. So, I'm very happy with my win today. I thought the team helped me a lot outside of the court. I think we did a great job today and we got three victories this weekend and that was our goal."
Boise State opened the contest by taking the doubles point 2-0 over the Tigers. The tandem of Simon Arca Costas and Caden Moortgat secured the first win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Peter Alam and Ran Amar 6-2.
Jan Lucca Marquardt and James Van Herzeele clinched the team point when they handed UOP's Coby McCaig and Manroop Saini a 6-3 loss on court two.
Singles proved to be a battle as the match came down to the final contest. Ryo Minakata extended Boise State's lead to 2-0 with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to notch his seventh victory of the year.
The Bronco advantage stretched to 3-0 when Van Herzeele finished off Liam Puttergill 6-2, 6-0 on court five. The freshman from Thailand is now 7-4 since joining the team this spring.
Pacific rallied back to tie the team score at 3-3 with wins on courts two, four and three, respectively, setting up the decisive final match.
Tied at three-all, the contest would be decided at No. 1 singles where Liborio was facing the Tigers' Aleska Mardjonovic in a freshman versus freshman battle. The Bronco won the opening set 7-5 and held a 5-1 lead in the second when Mardjonovic battled back to tie it up at 5-5. Liborio responded, taking the momentum back as he broke serve to go up 6-5, then finished it off by winning a deuce point to clinch Boise State's victory with a 7-5, 7-5 win. It was the second-straight match in which the native from Portugal clinched the victory for the Blue and Orange.
Boise State will continue its five-match homestand next weekend when the Broncos host Denver and LMU.
