Broncos Rally Past Air Force

4/8/2022 6:24:00 PM | Men's Tennis

USAFA, Colo. - Boise State men's tennis came back from one point down Friday afternoon to defeat the Air Force Falcons 4-1 on the road. James Van Herzeele clinched his second-straight match when he held off the Falcons' Luke Wolf in a second-set tiebreaker 6-2, 7-6(4) at No. 6 singles.

The win improved Boise State to 13-7 overall and 2-1 in Mountain West Conference play, while Air Force moved to 12-8 and 0-3.

Boise State head coach Beck Roghaar was happy with today's team's performance. "Today's match showed a lot of evolution in the maturity of our team. We dug ourselves a hole early after Air Force came out and played very good doubles to win the team point. It was definitely not an easy situation being on the road against a good Air Force team at their place, which is a tough place to win. I thought the win showed a lot of the resolve our players have and the maturity to settle in and get right to work in singles. It was good that we got a pretty fast start in singles, and we were able to get the team win. But again, I was pleased with the guys' effort today."

The Broncos found themselves down a point early after Air Force claimed the team doubles point with victories on courts two and three.  When the rally was finished, Boise State had won the four singles contests in straight sets to secure the victory.

Simon Arca Costas began the rally when he cruised past Johnny Mascagni in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 on court two to tie the match. It was also Arca Costas' 71st career singles victory.

Ryo Minakata put the Blue and Orange ahead when he dispatched Justin Waldman in two sets, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.

Not long after that, Pedro Liborio moved the Broncos within one of the team victory. Liborio took on Air Force's top player Robert Baylon at No. 1 singles, handing the Falcon a 6-1, 6-4 defeat to make the team score 3-1, Broncos.

Van Herzeele then closed it out with his two-set victory on court six.
