Singles Domination Powers Broncos to First MW Win

Boise State claimed four-straight victories in singles competition after dropping the doubles point to down Air Force, 4-1

BOISE, Idaho – No doubles point, no problem.

Despite dropping the doubles point to Air Force, the Boise State men's tennis team was able to rally for four-straight victories in singles competition to defeat the Falcons, 4-1, Sunday at the Boas Tennis Center. The win is the first victory of Mountain West play for the Broncos, and first under head coach Kristian Widen.

"It was a solid, solid match from our standpoint," Widen said. Air Force is known to play good doubles, so we knew that was going to be tough. All year, the team has bounced back really well from being down 0-1. Each guy is doing a good job taking responsibility for their own court and not looking for someone else to win. That was the case today. Each guy took care of business.

"We faced some adversity as far as lineups. Air Force challenged our lineup, so each guy was playing in a spot that they were not used to. The guys came out and did a good job of dealing with that. I'm very proud."

The Falcons (9-10, 0-4 MW) gained the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. The pair of Simon Arca Costas and Luka Soskic tied their match at 4-4 before play was halted.

Down 1-0, Boise State (11-6, 1-3 MW) grabbed first-set victories on four courts to regain the momentum. Wyatt DeMulling tied the match at 1-1 with a straight-set victory on court three (6-1, 6-2), Minutes later, Simon Stenlund picked up the win in the six spot (6-4, 6-2) to push the Broncos to a 2-1 lead.

On court five, Maximilien Blancaneaux was able to hold on for the 6-3, 6-2 victory for a 3-1 lead for the Broncos. Soskic was able to clinch the match for Boise State with a straight-set victory in the number one spot (6-4, 6-4).

Both Jack Heslin and Arca Costas dropped the first set of their respective matches, but were leading in the second set before play was halted.

With their first conference win under their belts, the Broncos will hit the road for a pair of matches next weekend. Boise State will open the weekend at Nevada (April 12), before travelling to Fresno State for the Sunday match (April 15).

The Broncos will close out the regular season at home, hosting Utah State on April 20.
