The Boise State freshman won in three sets at No. 6 singles to clinch the 4-2 team victory over the Rebels.
BOISE, Idaho - James Van Herzeele's three-set singles victory on court six clinched Boise State's 4-2 win over UNLV in Mountain West Conference action at Boise on Sunday. The Blue and Orange were leading 3-2 when Van Herzeele brought the win home with a dominating set three performance to beat the Rebels' Anton Ornberg 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
The victory improved the Broncos to 12-7 overall and 1-1 in the league, while UNLV fell to 11-11 and 0-2.
Boise State Head Coach Beck Roghaar was happy with the way his team bounced back after Friday, "I think we felt like we left a little money on the table on Friday. I think the guys did a great job of responding and getting themselves ready to come back today, they did a really nice job of coming out and executing, and it was great for us to come out on top."
Coach Roghaar was excited to see Van Herzeele come through in a pressure moment, "James has matured a lot, and we're asking a lot of him right now. I think it's been really cool to see him learn and grow as the season has progressed. He has only been here since January, so he's just been learning on the fly, baptized by fire. So to see him walk through that door today was a big statement from him to our team."
Boise State won the doubles point with decisive wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Van Herzeele and Jan Lucca Marquardt blew past their opponents in a shutout 6-0 on court two, followed by Simon Arca Costas and Caden Moortgat rolling to a 6-1 win at the No. 1 position.
The two teams split the first four singles matches in the tightly contested encounter. Arca Costas gave the Broncos a 2-0 advantage when he recorded his 70th career singles victory 6-2, 6-2 over Jordan Sauer on court two.
Marquardt moved the Blue and Orange within one of the victory at 3-1 with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
UNLV countered by winning the No. 1 singles match to make the score 3-2 Boise State, setting up Van Herzeele for the match-clinching opportunity.
Next weekend, the Broncos will be on the road when they travel to play at Air Force and New Mexico.
